This proposal is to provide summer support for the PIs and
some graduate students and equipment. The proposal is supplementary
to other support the PIs are getting from a variety of sources.
The research proposed is therefore quite varied and not really
subject to variation for this proposal.

I am only familiar at all with the work of Michalski, and
I have a high opinion of it. He is one of the most serious and
persistent workers in machine learning.

The most interesting topic to me is the use of temporal
knowledge, and what Baskin proposes is somewhat surprising to
me and perhaps novel. Most previous work involving temporal
reasoning has involved predicting the future or (more generally)
determining the consequences of possible actions or strategies
of action. Baskin seems to propose to concentrate on something
else, inferring facts from temporal data. In general this seems
less interesting than inferring the conseuences of strategies,
but it is a new area of considerable interest.
Therefore, it is a good candidate for support.
